An interesting research motivated by Justin. He told me that sitting actually decreases our lifespan and I went to Google about it!
Well, when I chose to stand up to study, it was simply due to the following reasons: 1. I'm feeling bloated after lunch. Sitting down will make me feel uncomfortable. 2. I'm feeling very sleepy. I will most probably lay my head on my arm and fall asleep on the table. HAHAHHAHAHHAH!
guess what, it helps! ^^
But my legs will start to ache after standing for a long period of time. I wonder how Kenneth stood for so long.
Sitting Shortens your Lifespan
By Dr. Maoshing Ni Dec 02, 2010
Stretching your legs more often may save your life. While no one would be surprised to hear that active people live longer, you might be surprised to learn that even if you exercise every day, sitting for long periods can shorten your life span. Read on to find out what the studies say and how to stand up for your longevity!
Our bodies are not designed to sit all day
Think about it: our ancestors were hunter gatherers who spent most of their waking lives moving around. Evolution shaped our bodily functions for a life on the move. But today, we are much more likely to sit on our way to work, stay parked at our desk when we get there, and at home, laze around like couch potatoes until it’s time to lay down for sleep. Even those that exercise 30 minutes a day are not immune to the health repercussions of sitting too much. Research has found that the danger lies in the overall amount of hours spent sitting without interruption.
Preliminary studies are in, and the news isn’t good. Recent studies have shown that sitting for prolonged periods of time can increase your risk for serious health issues, such as obesity, cardiovascular disease, and possibly cancer -- even if you exercise on a daily basis.
Sitting increases your risk for obesity and heart disease
Long periods of inactivity inevitably lead to weight gain because your body undergoes a metabolic slowdown; you use less blood sugar for energy, and therefore burn fewer calories. Many studies prove that sedentary time is a predictive factor in weight gain. It is also thought to play a major role in your heart health.
A study from the American Cancer Society compared a large group of long-time sitters with people who spent less than three hours a day being sedentary; after adjusting for risk factors like smoking, the researchers found there was a progressively higher risk of mortality across prolonged sitting times, especially for cardiovascular disease.
While the jury is still out on how many uninterrupted hours of sitting is a problem, 4- to 6-hour intervals could be the tipping point. Elin Ekblom-Bak, a researcher from the Swedish School of Sport and Health Sciences said, “after four hours of sitting the body starts to send harmful signals.” She went on to explain that sitting for long periods of time also decreases the activity of lipoprotein lipase, an enzyme secreted by the pancreas that eliminates fat in the blood.
The silver lining is that you don’t necessarily have to become a fitness fanatic to live a long life; a study from the Karolinska Institute and the Swedish School of Sport and Health found that even light and moderate physical activity, such as walking or cycling, can reduce your risk of early death.
Moral of the story: Stand up if you do not wish to shorten your lifespan! hahahahah!
I'm looking forward to Extreme Makeover! Can't wait to reach out to those people who're in need and share God's love with them! Love is affordable by all. God is Love. Jesus is God's extended helping loving hand toward mankind on earth or beyond. Jesus purpose is to reunite all creation into one single family of love! <3 I'm delighted by the fact that many of my classmates whom I've approached agreed to render their service to this movement! I thank God for placing me in this loving class of mine. Heheh ^^
How priceless is your unfailing love! Both high and low among men find refuge in the shadow of your wings (Psalm 36:7).
Give thanks to the God of heaven. His love endures forever (Psalm 136:26).
But because of his great love for us, God, who is rich in mercy, made us alive with Christ even when we were dead in transgressions--it is by grace you have been saved (Ephesians 2:4-5).
"The scars of your love remind me of us. They keep me thinking that we almost had it all."
I miss you. Plain and simple. I miss your presence in my life. I miss the feelings and moments I had when you were there with me. Change is the only constant and memories are the only things that don't change when everything else does. So what if I didn't rid that letter? We can never return to the past, can we?
It has been a long while since I update this page of mine. I'm not going to abandon this page for months like how I did in the past. haha. Just a brief summary of what happened in the month of April.
12 April 2011: Swiss Winds SYF Do we deserve a sliver medal? It's up to you to judge.
I'm disappointed, disappointed at how ugly the art scene is becoming in Singapore. Why must there be all these internal struggles, sabotages , politics and the innocent young musicians have to bear the brunt of it? Indignant. If we really deserve a sliver medal? Would the media have requested to film us? Would we be invited to perform in NDP once again? Food for thought.
20 April 2011: 31st Council Investiture Chapter 31: Every new beginning marks some other beginning's end. Being part of student council has undoubtedly allowed me to widen my social circle and to know more people in the school. It has indeed been an enriching experience as we worked together during each and every event we're assigned to.
"What is the true meaning of Easter?" I'm glad that I've managed to gain a lot of insights this easter season.
God works in ways that are often quite foreign to how I think things should go. Since we truly serve an all-knowing, all-powerful, all-wise God, then maybe it’s a good thing that His thoughts don’t always easily fit into a nice little logical box.
On Good Friday, we celebrate a death. The death of Christ.
As fully-God and fully-man, Jesus Christ fulfilled all of the commandments and laws that God had set forth. Because of this, Christ deserved life. And yet He chose death. Not just any death, but death for a people who didn't deserve it and certainly couldn't earn it. Death for you and for me; indeed, for all who trust in Christ for the salvation of their souls.
Yes, we celebrate a death on Good Friday because that death was offered as a great good to us by binding all who trust in Him to Jesus Christ; and yet we also celebrate a life on Easter Sunday – the One who died has risen again and those who hope in Him shall do the same. He has risen indeed.
I suppose many of us, including myself, wonder why are colours used in worship especially important during the season of Easter. So I went to research about it. hahahha!
The changing colors of the sanctuary from the purple of Lent to the black of Good Friday provide graphic visual symbols for the Lenten journey. The change of colors for Easter and the following Sundays helps communicate the movement of sacred time as well as personal faith journeys.
Red: The color red is symptomatic of the blood that Lord Jesus Christ shed from his forehead, when the crown of thorns pierced into his bones. He shed the blood as an atonement for the sins of humanity.
White: According to the legends, while was the color of the robe, by which Lord Jesus Christ was taken before he was scourged. The color white symbolizes the hope of the resurrection, as well as the purity and newness that comes from victory over sin and death.
Purple: Purple color is the color of royalty. It is the color of the garment that covered Jesus, when he was taken to the crucifix. Jesus Christ's face and eyes turned purple in color, when he was tortured while crucifixion. Black: Black is the color of sin or darkness that engulfed the world after Christ's crucifixion.
Yellow: Yellow symbolizes the light of the world brought by the risen Christ that enlightens the world.
“The dotted lines of our lives are ever void. It’s not complete till it’s signed. That’s what our lives are like. Always looking for someone to pen down their nod.”
We all need the signatures from others in one way or another, but more than just requiring an ink mark above a dotted line, what we are seeking for is often more than just the approval, but the acceptance that lies behind it.
The story of Easter is a story about acceptance. It is the drama about a Father who accepts us for who we are and who looks beyond the obvious flaws in our lives to see the potential of good within each and every one of our hearts. It is about a Son who accepts us and loves us so much but had to pay a hefty price for staying true to His love.“Signatures” – a message of acceptance, and allow Easter not just to happen around you, but to actually happen straight in your heart.
The message touched my heart as I listened through the sermon. Indeed, all of us longed to be accepted in on way or another, God accepted everyone single one of us regardless of our sins and our flaws. He loves us beyond reasons to love beyond words. Let's love people, genuinely. By any chance, if there's someone out there whom you've sidelined due to his/her imperfection, if you've discriminated against him/her due to his/her differences, it's time to reflect upon your own actions and put yourself in their shoes. I'm sure you would yearn to be accepted and not rejected too!
26 April 2011: An awesome Tuesday at Ikea with 10S24
I'm loving 10S24 each passing day. hahhahaah! The way we bond is simply amazing and I really thank God for putting me in this awesome class. We may be different in our own little way, we may be cliquey among the girls and boys, but we're definitely special in our own way!
Aren't they so adorable? I wonder what happened over the years! hahhahahahahhahahahahhahahahahahahhahahahahahahahahahahhahahahahahahahhahahahahahhahahahahahah!
27 April 2011: I crashed into ACJC My first attempt was successful. A productive study time with my dearest tiq <3 I think that's because I don't know the people there and that's why I can focus instead of chattering non stop and constantly looking around.
& the ACJC ruggers are very smelly. I can smell their odor when they walked passed me. Ewwwww. At the very least, they should change out of their smelly clothes instead of walking around the void deck (an extension of the canteen, somewhat like JJ's concourse area). I'm glad that JJ ruggers don't stink like them and that they'll shower after training and spare us from the odor. hahaha!
I gave Tan Yee Bing a shock! hahahhaha! It's a pity that I didn't managed to catch up with my dear evan because she was busy with her SYF preparation then! Once again, congratulation for being awarded Gold with Honors during SYF! ^^
I miss rongbear. hahahhaha!
29 April 2011: JJ Talent Time I can still remember how panicky, worried and disappointed the few of us were because we didn't managed to purchase the tickets as the response was overwhelming. haha. Ultimately, we managed to enter, in our own special and intelligent way! HAHHAHAHA! We saved a a sum of near $200! LOL! I think we should really thank Patrick for his help. Without him, I wouldn't know how to go about assisting my entire class to enter the hall. lol. I'm really happy for Ms Sheer who won the vocal group category! I'm glad I managed to catch the performance of Ms Sheer because I missed all of their rehearsal and etc previously. No more guilt! Yayyyy!
Cabbed home together with Shao Hao, Si Wei and Wayne. It's funny to see shaohao worried face whenever he takes a cab, to the extent that he didn't pay Wayne the supposed sum. "It's because the meter keep jumping, then I started being anxious"-Shao Hao. HAHAHHA!
I fell during PE on thursday!!! HEHEHEH! After falling down, I got so fascinated by the blood dripping and flowing down my leg. I started laughing and running to the toilet to wash my wound with tap water. Yes, running with my injured leg. HAHAHAHAHHAHAH! It hurts, I swear, but I just didn't show it on my face. Coupled to that I'm used to falling down. HAHHAAHAHAHAAH! I may be laughing despite being injured and feeling the excruciating pain on my knee, but don't judge me, I'm not a sadist masochist. haha. I started playing with the solution Mr Sufian gave me to wash my wound. For once, I thought 20ml of solution was a lot because it took me near 20 mins to finish that bottle of solution, drip by drip. But I'm glad to have two nurses attending to my injury! Teehee! I felt so blessed!
Pain pain go away, wound, please heal faster! I want to be able to walk normally, jump around, hop around and run around!
I like the fact that people start asking me and showing concern for me when they know about my injury. Well, that's normal isn't it? Who wouldn't want more love and concern from the people around them? hahahahah! Anyway, thanks! I really do appreciate all your care and concern! Love you guys loads! <3
We had an awesome day out last Sunday despite the fact that our attendance was pretty demoralizing. Those who didn't go for the outing, are you envious of us upon seeing all our photos?! hahahahhahahahahh! okay, i shall not be bad. heheheh!
Shiah Leei: "Sad... I go cry myself to sleep" Sheena: "不要伤心难过!明天会更好!" Shiah Leei: Tomorrow will be worse than today just like Japan incident"
-.-!
Sheena: "its very demoralizing to receive consecutive "sorry, Im not going tomorrow" :(" Khairul: Hahaha, nevermind even if very little ppl go, i'll make sure you have a great time okay?"
What a stark contrast in their replies uh.
Irwin and I wore the same slippers. Black havaianas with gold wording! hahahah! OGLs of OG 11! (Y) Yayyyyy! It's quite funny when Irwin mistaken my slippers for his slippers because they look alike.
It's quite funny how we would fight over these three polariod photos, in particular to the group one! hahahaha! Let's take more next time!!!!!
We went to the SkyGarden at VivoCity to have our dinner and to lepak. We slack our time away, talking nonsense, video watching, star gazing & etc.
I love this awesome company that I've in JJ!
Hahaha, all of us were feeling very reluctant to head to school the following day. We were dreading the large amount of workload that awaits us when we return back to school. And guess what, our attendance for school on the following Monday was 3/6. Only Khairul, Irwin and I went to school. hahaha. Jiayi returned to school the following Tuesday while Amirah and Shiah Leei returned to school the following Wednesday.
On Tuesday Sheena: "Shiah Leei never come school today ah?" Chuen Gio (Shiah Leei's twins): "No." Sheena: "Why? Sick ah?" Chuen Gio: "Yah, sick of school." (HAHAHHAHAHAHHAHAHAHAHHAHAHAHAHHAHAAHA)
After this break, it was time for us to face the reality of our grades and to buck up! We need to press on, motivate and encourage each other as we continue to study and prepare for our upcoming A levels examination! There's no room for regrets!
"When the referee blew the whistle at the end, seeing only sad and disappointed faces around you, even if no one blames you, you just feel bad."-Khairul
Indeed, in our everyday life there bounds to have snag: – a problem faced, a difficult situation, etc. One’s morale may become low but if you want to excel in life, self motivation is essential. You must know how to motivate yourself. You must be able to keep your spirit high no matter how discouraging a situation is. That’s the only way to get the power you need to overcome difficulties. Those who are discouraged in difficult times are certain to lose even before the battle is over.
PRESS ON COUGARS! You guys may not have emerged victory during today's match, but experience is what you get! Learn from today's mistakes and you guys will definitely do better the next match!
This has inevitably reminded me of my experience as a member of Swiss Winds. We had failed to keep up with our usual standard of attaining a Gold or Gold with Honors during syf. This is a fact that we can't deny, yet again, given a choice, it's a fact that we wouldn't want to acknowledge. We will always talk about our glorious involvements, achievements and participations, but definitely not our disappointing result last syf. Although 2 years have past, I still feel very apologetic towards Swiss Winds, predominantly because I'm part of the chief council then. Oh well, I think this incident will haunt me for life.
No one can whistle a symphony. It takes an orchestra to play it. I'm glad that Swiss Winds stood strong and was not defeated! They managed to clinched a gold award during the recent competition held in Hong Kong during the winter band festival and I pray that they will reap the fruits of their effort this syf. 12 April!!!!!!!!!!
School seems to be getting interesting with a new friend in class. Bryant seems to be getting along pretty well with the company in 10S24, which is great! & I must say, he's a gentlemen, in contrast to the typical guys in 10S24. Okay, they are pretty good at times and in fact they are nicer this year as compared to last year. Hmm, I hope I'm not contradicting myself. hahah! My sis says that with the influence of Bryant, maybe the other guys in my class would buck up and more gentlemen. Yeah, I definitely do hope so.... haha!
10S24 may be different from 09S29, but we are who we are. I think we're unique in our own ways. heh!
Leon, Dionne, Fionn. Jane, James. Bryan, Bryant. Our teachers must have good pronunciations in order to call out to the right person.
Anyway, 10S24 is currently on the craze in playing Kart Rider. This is what happens when majority of your classmates are iPhone users. We download the same game and play together. I like!
I'm feeling kinda excited for school tmr, it's APRIL FOOLS' DAY. & some dudes aren't going to school because they're having NS medical check-up. Tsk tsk.
